LGBTQ+ community

Our practice

At our practice, we embrace and support everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, and we strive to provide empathic and high-quality experiences for all our patients

We understand that many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community may be hesitant to seek medical help due to past negative encounters

To address this, our entire staff is actively working to enhance their understanding of the unique challenges faced by our LGBTQ+ patients and to offer them positive support in accessing the care that is required.

Please note the NHS uses ‘Trans’ as an umbrella term to embrace the diverse range of identities outside the traditional male/female definitions. These include transgender, gender fluid and non-binary.

Changing your title or pronouns

Did you know?

You can change your title from Mr to Miss/Mrs/Ms/ Mx or from Miss/Mrs/Ms to Mr / Mx without changing your NHS records or gender.

Similarly, if you wish to modify your preferred pronouns, you can simply inform us, and we will be happy to use the pronouns that align with your identity.

Please feel free to let us know how you’d like to be addressed, and we will make sure to honour your choices respectfully.

Changing your name

Did you know?

To change your name on your medical records you need to complete a Change of Personal Details form.

If you prefer, we can add a “known as” name to your record so we as a practice can call you by your preferred name .

Changing your gender on medical records

Patients may request to change gender on their patient record at any time and do not need to have undergone any form of gender reassignment treatment to do so.

However, it’s important to be aware of the implications of a gender change on your medical record.

We must advise you, the patient, that changing your gender on your records would mean that you will be supplied with a new NHS number which is not reversible, and we will need to register you as a new patient.

Your old NHS number will no longer exist and your existing medical information will be transferred into your new medical record minus any information relating to your previous identity.

Should you later wish to revert to your previous gender, you will be issued with a third NHS number, and your existing medical information will be transferred to your new record, once again omitting any information about your previous identity.

Please note: Upon changing your gender, it is important that you understand that you will not receive automatic invites for screening for certain cancers and conditions.

We request that you book an appointment with a doctor first to discuss your relevant screening and health needs prior to changing your NHS gender from that assigned at birth. We, as a practice, are responsible for inviting you to discuss appropriate screening at the relevant time. If you agree to the above conditions, the process of gender change is expected to be completed four weeks after your GP appointment and you will be notified upon completion. Please ensure we have your up-to-date contact information.

After changing your gender, it’s crucial for you to be aware that automatic invites for screening for certain cancers and conditions may not be received. Therefore, we strongly advise you to read and fully understand the guidance provided by the NHS.

This leaflet is specifically designed for individuals who identify as trans (transgender) or non-binary in England. It explains the adult NHS screening programmes that are available in England and explains who is invited for screening.
